Full-Time Woman, Part-Time Career

August 22, 2008

As we recieve more and more axiom entrants, we have discovered that these authors are as diverse as the books they submit. Take for example the bronze medal winner of the Self-Employment/Home-Based Business category, Karen Stede Terry:

Karen Steede Terry is an Axiom award-winning author, successful entrepreneur, career management expert, dedicated volunteer and devoted mom. Her second book Full-Time Woman, Part-Time Career: Launching a Flexible Business That Fits Your Life, Feeds Your Family and Fuels Your Brain is the definitive companion for women who want to earn an independent living while enjoying everything family life has to offer. As an expert coach, Karen advises women on how they can use their existing professional skills to go out on their own and build a flexible business.

After getting married and moving to a new city without having a job, Karen chose to strike out on her own rather than jump back into the job market. She was the first woman to obtain training certifications from
TrimbleR Navigation, LTD. and ESRIR, Inc., the two market leaders in the Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) markets, respectively. She was also the exclusive GIS/GPS
trainer for the State of Texas for five years.

After teaching her classes, Karen was approached by students and colleagues for advice on her flexible business model. Most were young women looking to combine a successful professional career with
motherhood. She discovered a lack of resources for women who desired to be at home with their families and pursue their professional interests. Karen embraced her teaching instincts and set out to provide guidance and coaching for women looking to start home businesses. Her efforts culminated in her second book, titled Full-Time Woman, Part-Time Career.

Communication has long been the cornerstone of successful business, but the way in which one communicates has proved to be even more pivotal. Beyond Buzz: The Next Generation of Word-of-Mouth Marketing by Lois Kelly stresses the art of honest conversation and truly listening to one’s customers in an effort that earned her a gold medal in our Advertising/Marketing category. Kelly argues that this open communication allows companies to become aware of their clients’ needs and identify what is important to them. She provides readers with all they need to facilitate meaningful discussion, connect on an emotional level, and accomplish their marketing goals
